Before I arrived in Rishikesh, my understanding of yoga revolved around a mat, some poses, and a studio playlist. In India, I learned that yoga is an ancient philosophy, a holistic lifestyle that encompasses ethics, meditation, self-discipline, and union with the higher self. Asanas (the physical postures) are just one of the eight limbs of yoga as described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Waking up at 5:30 am, practicing for hours, studying philosophy, attending satsangs, and maintaining a vegetarian diet—it all sounded like a challenge. But soon, the routine became a rhythm. I learned that structure can create space for inner growth. When you stick to a disciplined practice, you gain mental clarity and a sense of control over your impulses. Ironically, the rigidity opened up a new kind of freedom—the freedom from distraction, laziness, and doubt.

Standing in front of a class and guiding others through a yoga flow was nerve-wracking. But I learned that teaching is not about being the best yogi in the room—it’s about holding space.
